Automotive Technology 1

Grade 10

Course Syllabus

Chicopee Comprehensive High School, Career & Technical Education

Course Description: 

Students will be introduced to the field of automotive technology, instruction in shop safety, general automotive repairs, brakes, mounting and balancing tires, drive train and axles, engine performance (emissions, engine tune-up), automotive electrical systems and an Introduction to front end alignment and, steering and suspension. Related classroom instruction is also part of this course of study. Prerequisite is the successful completion of the Explore 2000 program, and/or with the approval of the Director for Career and Technical Education.

Career related fields include Tune-up Technician, Motor Vehicle Inspector, Parts & Accessories Distributor, Transmission Technician, Air Conditioning Specialist, Heavy Equipment Technician, Automobile Service writer, Electrical Diagnostic Technician, Suspension Specialist, Race car mechanic, Aircraft Mechanic, Engine Repairer, Diesel Technician, Front End Alignment Specialist, Service station Owner/Operator, and Service Manger.

Course Objectives: 

At the end of this course the student will have a thorough mastery of  the following:

1.     Automotive and shop safety, basic electrical, brake systems and engine performance.

2.     Hand and power tools, electrical testing equipment and parts cleaning equipment.

3.     Current sources of repair  information (e.g. repair manuals, Alldata)

4.     Current sources of information on automotive technology (e.g. magazines, the web)

Automotive Technology1 is a prerequisite to automotive technology 2 unless waived by the Director for Career and Technical Education.

The length of the course is 478 hours.

Assessment:  Grades will be based on the following:

65%     Laboratory Competencies

25%     Response paper

10%     Homework, Quiz's, and Tests

Degree of competency explanation:  Should reflect employability readiness rather than the grades given in class.

Rating Scale:

0 – No Exposure - no experience/knowledge in this area; program/course did not provide instruction in this area

1 – Unsuccessful Attempt - unable to meet knowledge or performance criteria and/or required significant assistance

2 – Partial Demonstration - met some of the knowledge or performance criteria with or without minor assistance

3 – Knowledge Demonstrated - met knowledge criteria without assistance at least once

4 – Performance Demonstrated - met performance criteria without assistance at least once

5 – Repetitive Demonstration - met performance and/or knowledge criteria without assistance on multiple occasions

6 – Mastered - successfully applied knowledge or skills in this area to solve related problems independently

Instructional Philosophy:  Student assessment will be based on group work, individual completion of competencies, theory work, response papers, and tests of students' knowledge of  competencies demonstrated. In carrying out projects, students will explain how they thought through the assignment and considered what resources were needed to complete the project. The student will demonstrate mastery of the material by achieving repetitive demonstration meeting performance and/or knowledge criteria without assistance on multiple occasions.

Major Course Assignments and Projects:  The students will complete specific tasks specified in the automotive technology 1 curriculum. Students must complete 5-response papers related to an automotive topic of their choice during the first semester. During the second semester they will complete another response paper.

Course Goals:  Successful completion of automotive technology 1 at a mastered competency level and at a grade of 70 or better. Passing the MACAS exam.

Who is eligible to take this course:  Students interested in becoming automotive technicians or any others careers stated elsewhere in this syllabus.
